Sviatoslav’s Story
Diagnosis in Ukraine 💔
At 1.5 years old, Sviatoslav was diagnosed with a brainstem tumor — a rare and complex condition causing neurological and respiratory complications. Ukrainian doctors saw no path to treatment: a biopsy was considered too risky due to the likelihood of bleeding and complications, and surgery was deemed impossible.
Searching for a clinic abroad
The family turned to leading clinics in several countries — Israel, Turkey, Germany, Austria, Greece, and others. Every one declined: the complexity of Sviatoslav’s case exceeded what these clinics were prepared to take on.
A solution found ❤️🩹
The search led the family to Olesia, who specializes in finding treatment options for complex cases. She took on the search, consulting leading doctors and clinics worldwide, and ultimately found a solution: Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona — one of Europe’s leading pediatric medical centers — agreed to take on Sviatoslav’s case.
Transport
Given the risks associated with a brainstem tumor, doctors deemed air travel dangerous. The decision was made to transport Sviatoslav by medical vehicle — from Dnipro to Barcelona, 3,550 km, a two-day journey. The boy, who required continuous oxygen support, was accompanied by his parents, Yevheniia and Oleksandr.
Arrival in Barcelona 💗
Sviatoslav was admitted to Sant Joan de Déu Hospital. He underwent an MRI, ultrasound, and necessary tests, and his tracheostomy tube was replaced. A medical board determined the next steps — including a biopsy and comprehensive diagnostics — to decide on a course of treatment.
Now
Sviatoslav remains under the care of doctors in Barcelona, receiving treatment that no other clinic the family approached was able to provide.
